Our vision for breedingMy initial interest in Labradors came from being a medical service dog handler. I set out to breed dogs that I would want to have as a service dog, life and competition partner. The mother of this litter, Pixie, is a service dog in training who will take over when her brother Bodhi retires. The Labrador I hope to produce is moderate, neither too heavy nor too light, with correct conformation, good health, and good working ability in many different venues. No expense or effort was spared in completing health screenings for this breeding pair. Both sire and dam have had all breed appropriate health screenings including hips, elbows, advanced cardiac exam, eyes and genetic panel. Before you buy a puppy from anyone, we encourage you to investigate whether they have done all of the proper health testing AND view the results for yourself in the OFA database. Below you can click the link to view Pixie and Brew's full results in the OFA database. Both are clear for all testable, heritable diseases.
Pixie: https://ofa.org/advanced-search/?appnum=2450148 Brew: https://ofa.org/advanced-search/?appnum=2235131 The sire, Brew brings a lot to the table, and I am so grateful to Breezy Labradors for allowing us to breed to him. He is a UKC Champion as well as a Master Hunter with his Working Certificate Advanced. He also travels extensively with his owner and from that wealth of activity I feel he is demonstrating the type of steadiness, stamina and versatility needed for service work. His owner describes him as follows: "a wonderful easy going temperament and natural off-switch, yet still possessing great working ability. His drive and stamina in the field compares to that of a field bred dog and he is extremely eager to please. Brew is a joy to be around and handles everything thrown at him with ease." Being a field x show cross, Brew also brings a huge amount of genetic diversity to this breeding. The predicted coefficient of inbreeding for this litter is just 14%, which is far lower than most English Labradors that I am aware of. This is a subject of great importance to me, as the higher the coefficient of inbreeding, the more likely we are to encounter unknown recessive traits popping up as well as inbreeding depression (the opposite of hybrid vigor). These puppies will be 3/4 English, 1/4 field, and I expect they should have a nice handsome breed type as both of the parents do. Pixie is a full English lab from Spellcast Labradors. She is the half sister to my service dog Bodhi. Pixie has a can-do attitude and always gives me a 100%. I was lucky enough to meet several generations of of the female line behind Pixie when I visited Spellcast. They are lovely, kind, gentle dogs. Pixie has been loads of fun to share my life with. She has a great sense of humor and a great zest for life. She has gamely tried every sport I've aimed her at and her passions are tracking and scent work. She has an incredible nose! Pixie has also been in service dog training so that she is ready to take over when her brother is ready to retire. She has also filled in as a working service dog during one medical leave that Bodhi had for a procedure. That trip included her first hotel stay, first elevator, and there happened to be jets flying over which didn't phase her a bit. These puppies should be versatile, all purpose dogs and great family companions. |
