Juliana - Founder and Head Trainer
Juliana has worked with animals professionally for the past twenty five years. She began her career with horses. She spent more than a decade with a renowned boarding, training and lesson barn, where she completed her training and instructing apprenticeship and became a Massachusetts licensed riding instructor and horse trainer. Throughout that ten year period, she taught group, semi-private, and private horseback riding lessons and assisted the farm owner/head trainer in training school, sales, and boarder's horses. Juliana was deeply involved with the natural horsemanship movement, studying equine behavior and the application of natural body language and pressure to achieve training results in a more humane fashion. She has found that many of these same principles are applicable to canines.
Although she always had dogs in her home and life, Juliana first got involved with formal training of dogs as matter of necessity when she adopted an unruly German Shepherd from a local shelter in 2002. Around 2007, she left the professional horse world to focus exclusively on dogs. For many years, Juliana concurrently worked as a dog walker/pet-sitter both independently and for an acclaimed Boston-area company. This enabled her to gain expertise handling many breeds, types and sizes of dogs.
Juliana earned her Bachelor's of Science in Psychology, graduating Summa Cum Laude from Walden University. While earning this degree, she studied animal learning and behavior. She developed a thorough, scientific understanding of operant conditioning, and classical conditioning, which are building blocks of dog training.
She completed her intensive professional education and certification process with the Companion Animal Sciences Institute in 2013. This consisted of six months of study of animal behavior principles and dog training technology. Companion Animal Sciences Institute is an approved education provider for the Association of Animal Behavior Professionals, Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers, the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants, Pet Professional Guild’s Pet Professional Accreditation Board, and is approved by the Delta Society Australia. Juliana continues to study the work of other dog trainers and behaviorists in order to constantly stay abreast of the most scientifically accurate dog training techniques and theories. She also passionately supports animal rescue and has volunteered many hours of her time to helping dogs and other animals in need.
Juliana strives to learn from other trainers in person whenever possible, and has learned in person from Certified Pet Dog Trainers, Certified Behavior Consultants, and well known trainers such as Michael Ellis, Ivan Balabanov, Robin MacFarlane, Chad Mackin, and Jason Vasconi. Juliana trains and competes with her own dogs in various dog sports and working venues, and has put over 25 titles on four different dogs. Juliana believes in training and titling her own dogs because the process of teaching and proofing each behavior through trial level is similar to teaching any other behavior to a pet dog through a functional level. Like anything, practice makes perfect. Every dog is different and every time Juliana works a new dog she learns something new about the process of dog training.
